What does error code B030 in the airbag control unit indicate?
Error code B030 indicates an internal electronic fault within the airbag control unit (SRS module). This is not a malfunction of external components such as sensors, but rather a disruption on the device’s main circuit board itself, which prevents it from functioning correctly and disables the entire airbag system.
Technically speaking, during its self-diagnosis, the control unit detects an inconsistency or failure in critical internal components. These may include defective capacitors, resistors, or other integrated circuits.
Once this internal fault is identified, the module stores error code B030, activates the airbag warning light, and enters a safety mode. In this state, the protective function of the airbags is no longer guaranteed, and the error cannot be resolved simply by clearing it.
How can you recognize error code B030?
The most obvious symptom of error code B030 is the permanently illuminated airbag warning light on the instrument cluster. This light does not turn off after starting the vehicle. Additionally, error code B030 can be read during diagnostics, but it cannot be permanently cleared.
The active warning light is a clear signal from the vehicle that the Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) has been completely deactivated due to the detected fault. In the event of an accident, the airbags will no longer provide their intended protection.
In some cases, the light may initially illuminate sporadically before remaining constantly on. This suggests an impending component failure inside the control unit.
What are the technical causes of error code B030?
The primary cause of error code B030 is a hardware defect on the airbag control unit’s circuit board. Most often, these are aged or defective electronic components such as capacitors and resistors. Short circuits caused by moisture or faulty solder joints can also trigger this internal error.
Electronic components naturally age over time. Electrolytic capacitors, in particular, can lose capacitance or leak over the years, leading to malfunctions and the storage of error code B030.
Another common cause is short circuits on the circuit board. These can arise from moisture ingress, dirt, or even hairline cracks in the conductive traces, disrupting the sensitive electronics.
Although the fault is internal, issues in peripheral components—such as defective connectors or a damaged coil spring in the steering wheel—can place electrical stress on the control unit, causing long-term damage.
In rarer cases, software or coding problems may also trigger the error, though experience shows that the root cause usually lies in the control unit’s hardware.

Error code B030 is a well-known internal defect that primarily affects classic Porsche models. The Porsche 968, in particular, is frequently affected by this specific issue in the airbag control unit, requiring targeted electronic repairs.
