What does error code B1240 mean?
Error code B1240 indicates an internal temperature fault in the airbag control unit. This points to a critical hardware defect where the control unit measures an implausible temperature—either due to overheating or a faulty temperature sensor on the circuit board. The system classifies this as a safety‑critical issue and deactivates itself.
Technically, the airbag control unit continuously monitors its own operating temperature. If the measured value deviates from the predefined setpoints, error code B1240 is stored in the fault memory. This is a protective measure designed to prevent malfunctions of the airbag system under extreme temperature conditions.
The root cause is almost always found at the hardware level. An internal temperature sensor, aging components, or voltage issues can lead to this erroneous reading. As a result, the airbag warning light illuminates to alert the driver to the malfunction in the safety system.
How do you recognize error code B1240?
The most obvious symptom of error code B1240 is the permanently illuminated airbag warning light on the instrument cluster. It does not turn off after starting the vehicle, indicating that the airbag system is not operational due to the detected internal fault, potentially compromising occupant safety.
In most cases, the airbag indicator remains lit continuously. Occasional flashing is uncommon for this specific error code, as it typically involves an internal, usually persistent hardware failure.
Additionally, the control unit may become unresponsive via the diagnostic interface. Attempts to read or clear the fault memory using a standard diagnostic tool often fail because the module is locked in an internal safety mode.
What causes B1240?
The primary cause of error code B1240 is hardware defects on the airbag control unit’s circuit board. Most commonly, these include a faulty internal temperature sensor, age‑related component degradation, or problems with the power supply. Stored crash data can further inhibit functionality, but it is not the main reason for the temperature error.
Microelectronic components such as the temperature sensor may fail over time or produce unreliable readings. Cold solder joints or other age‑related damage to electronic parts on the board are also frequent sources of failure.
Another critical factor is voltage instability. Fluctuations in the power supply or sustained undervoltage can disrupt sensitive electronics and trigger the temperature error. In such cases, additional error codes like B1003, B1600, or 9003 often appear, explicitly pointing to faulty power supply issues.
Although error code B1240 primarily signals a temperature problem, clearing any stored crash data is essential during repair. After a collision, many control units self‑lock; this lock must be professionally released to restore full functionality.
