What does error code U1726-87 mean?
Error code U1726-87 indicates a critical communication failure of the airbag control unit (NAB) on the CAN bus. The unit can no longer send or receive expected data messages, usually due to a physical break in the data line, an internal hardware defect in the control unit, or an incorrect system configuration (proxy). The suffix '-87' specifies the type of missing message.
Technically, this is a network integrity fault. The airbag control unit, also known as the airbag node (NAB), is an active participant in the vehicle’s CAN network. It continuously communicates with other critical control units such as the body computer or the instrument cluster.
If this communication fails—whether because the CAN high or CAN low lines are broken, or because the CAN transceiver within the control unit itself is defective—the other system participants detect the absence of the expected status messages. As a result, error code U1726-87 is set, and the airbag warning light illuminates, since the functional safety of the entire restraint system can no longer be guaranteed.
What symptoms indicate U1726-87?
The primary symptom of error code U1726-87 is a permanently illuminated airbag warning light on the instrument cluster. Additionally, diagnostic tools typically cannot establish communication with the airbag control unit. In vehicles like the Fiat Ducato or Daily, the odometer display may also flash, indicating a proxy configuration conflict.
The airbag warning light remains on after starting the vehicle and does not turn off as it normally would, signaling a severe, persistent fault in the safety system.
Another clear sign is the inability to access the airbag module’s fault memory. Workshop testers and scan tools report that the control unit does not respond, as it has been physically or logically disconnected from the CAN bus.
In Fiat-based systems, a flashing odometer is a strong indicator of a problem with the proxy configuration. The vehicle network detects an inconsistency because an expected node—the airbag control unit—is not reporting correctly.
In some cases, accompanying general CAN bus errors such as U0019 (CAN bus B power fault) or U0001 (High Speed CAN Communication Bus) may also be logged in other control units.
What causes U1726-87?
The most common cause of U1726-87 is a physical disruption of the CAN lines due to cable breaks, corrosion, or poor connector contacts. Closely following are internal hardware defects within the airbag control unit itself, often caused by moisture damage. Less frequently, faulty proxy configurations or issues with the power supply are responsible.
First and foremost are unstable or interrupted CAN lines. Corrosion on connector pins, mechanical damage, or cable breaks between the airbag control unit and the body computer are the main sources of failure in practice.
A defect in the control unit itself is also a frequent cause. This could be a connector corroded by water damage or a failure of internal components on the circuit board, such as the CAN transceiver IC.
An incorrect proxy configuration (proxy mismatch) can trigger the error. This often occurs after component replacement or improper coding, resulting in messages like “incorrect component installed” that block communication.
Problems with the power supply or ground connection at the control unit can likewise cause communication failures. Accompanying error codes such as B0101 or 8101 (supply voltage out of range) point in this direction.
In rare cases, inferior or incompatible OBD diagnostic adapters—especially in older vehicles—may generate false U-codes or disrupt communication with the airbag control unit.

Error code U1726-87 is specific to vehicles from the Fiat Group and primarily affects models based on the Ducato platform.
