Chevrolet Cavalier airbag control unit repair(1)

What should I pay attention to with Chevrolet Cavalier airbag control units?

The Chevrolet Cavalier airbag control unit evaluates the crash sensors, triggers the airbags and, where fitted, the belt tensioners, and monitors the entire system. If the system detects a fault, the airbag warning light comes on in the vehicle.

After an accident, the control unit stores crash data and locks itself. Such a state should be handled by a specialist workshop. Which component is affected can only be determined by diagnosis.

Airbag24 repairs the customer's own control unit that is sent in and deletes the crash data during this process. Whether a specific unit can be repaired is determined by the inspection after it arrives.

The airbag is safety-relevant. Removal and all work on the airbag system should be carried out exclusively by a specialist workshop, because a malfunction affects safety in an emergency.

Which Chevrolet Cavalier generations are there?

Airbag24 has the JS series of the Chevrolet Cavalier on file, with a production period from 1995 to 2005. Allocation to the series is based on the year of manufacture and the part number of the control unit.

The JS series brought a complete redesign of the model in 1995 and was built until 2005. During its production period, the front and rear styling received model updates.

  • JS (1995–2005) – the Chevrolet Cavalier series listed in our shop

Vehicles outside this production period are not included in this selection.

How do I identify my Chevrolet Cavalier airbag control unit?

The part number on the label of the control unit determines the exact version. You should also check the year of manufacture and equipment of the vehicle before sending in the unit.

The part number is the most important reference for identification. For the Chevrolet Cavalier, the following part numbers are on file in our shop, without any claim to completeness:

  • 22674098

Examples of fault codes from the fault memory are B1000, B0012 and B0052. The code B0052 indicates that an entry with crash data was stored after a deployment. A single code, however, does not prove a defect; only an inspection of the control unit shows the cause.

Which airbag equipment does the Chevrolet Cavalier have?

The basic equipment of the Chevrolet Cavalier included driver and front passenger airbags as standard. Side airbags were not standard equipment and were offered as an option, depending on model year and trim level.

The control unit only controls the airbags that are installed in the respective vehicle. The equipment of a specific vehicle can be checked using the vehicle registration document or the equipment list.

The repair process works as follows:

  • Have the fault memory read out.
  • Have the battery disconnected and the control unit removed by a specialist workshop.
  • Create a repair order online.
  • Send the control unit to Airbag24 by parcel.

Processing usually takes 3–4 working days and covers inspection, repair and testing. The repaired control unit comes back with all vehicle data and is ready for use immediately after reinstallation — coding or programming is not required.
