MAN TGE airbag control unit repair(1)

What should be considered with MAN TGE airbag control units?

The airbag control unit of the MAN TGE evaluates the crash sensors, triggers the airbags and belt tensioners and monitors the entire system. If it detects a fault, it reports it via the airbag warning light. Airbag24 repairs the control unit you send in.

After an accident, the control unit stores crash data and locks itself. Airbag24 deletes the crash data as part of the repair. A control unit can also fail without an accident. Typical causes are internal faults caused by ageing electronics, overvoltage, for example from battery problems, moisture on plugs and contacts, and communication faults on the CAN bus.

An airbag is safety-relevant. Have any work on the airbag system carried out only by a specialist workshop and do not attempt to work on the system yourself.

Which MAN TGE generations are there?

The MAN TGE has been built since 2017 in the SY series, and its production is still ongoing.

The van came onto the market in 2017 and was then introduced across Europe. Hardware and software versions can change between model years within one series. For this reason, the series designation alone is not enough for an exact match.

  • SY (since 2017) – series of the MAN TGE with production still ongoing.

How do I identify my MAN TGE airbag control unit?

The part number on the control unit determines the exact version. Together with the model year and equipment of your vehicle, it identifies the matching unit.

The label with the part number is usually located directly on the housing of the control unit. The following part numbers are listed for the MAN TGE, without any claim to completeness:

  • 3Q0959655BG
  • 3Q0959655CL

The vehicle identification number (VIN) additionally helps to check which version is fitted. Fault codes can help with classification. Examples are B1600 (critical internal fault of the control unit), B2D92 (severe hardware damage to the control unit, often occurring together with B1600) and B1003 (supply voltage too low at the control unit). A single fault code does not prove a defect, however. The cause is only established by the inspection in the workshop.

What airbag equipment does the MAN TGE have?

The driver airbag is part of the standard equipment of the MAN TGE. In newer versions up to 3.5 t, the front passenger airbag is also standard and can be deactivated. Which further airbags your vehicle has is shown in its equipment list.

Side and curtain airbags are offered depending on the equipment. To see which modules are fitted in your vehicle, check the vehicle's equipment list.

The route to repair: first have the fault memory read out. The battery is then disconnected and the control unit removed; a specialist workshop should carry out these steps. You then create a repair order online and send the control unit to us by parcel, carefully packed. The repair takes place in our workshop in Berlin. Whether a defect can be repaired is determined by the inspection. Processing usually takes 3 to 4 working days: checking, repairing and testing.

The repaired control unit comes back with all vehicle data and is ready for use immediately after refitting — no coding or programming is required.
