What does the error “No Communication – Control Unit Defective” indicate?

The error “No Communication – Control Unit Defective” indicates a complete failure of the airbag control unit. The module is no longer reachable by diagnostic tools due to a severe internal hardware defect. This results in the total deactivation of the entire airbag system and poses a maximum safety risk.

This error code is one of the most critical messages associated with the Supplemental Restraint System (SRS). It means that the central control unit, which must deploy airbags and seatbelt pretensioners in the event of a crash, is either no longer functional or no longer responding to requests via the diagnostic bus.

The cause is usually a serious hardware failure. This can be an internal defect on the circuit board caused by overvoltage, an electrical short circuit, or wear and tear. Likewise, water damage leading to corrosion can result in complete functional failure.

In the fault memory of other control units, this condition may be recorded as a CAN-bus error or under specific codes such as B1000 (control unit defective), 65535 (supply voltage too low), B1010, or B1315 (power supply faulty), all of which point to a defective control unit.

How can you recognize this error?

The primary symptom is a continuously illuminated or flashing airbag warning light on the instrument cluster. Additionally, a diagnostic tool cannot establish communication with the airbag control unit. In this state, the entire restraint system is non-functional, which can be fatal in the event of a crash.

The most obvious sign for the driver is the permanently lit airbag warning light. It does not turn off after starting the vehicle, indicating a serious self-diagnosed fault.

In the workshop, the suspicion is confirmed when attempting to read the airbag system’s fault memory fails. The control unit does not respond to the tester’s queries, resulting in the diagnosis “No Communication.”

Depending on the vehicle model, additional warnings may appear. On some vehicles, the engine check light also flashes to highlight the severity of the fault within the vehicle’s safety system.

What causes the control unit’s communication failure?

The main cause is an internal hardware defect within the control unit itself, often triggered by overvoltage or moisture damage. Other reasons include damaged cables, corroded connectors, or faulty signals from peripheral components such as crash sensors or the coil spring, which can block the control unit.

First and foremost are defects inside the control unit. Electronic components on the circuit board can fail due to aging, cold solder joints, or damage from overvoltage. This leads to an internal short circuit or interruption that disables the device.
