Error code 65535, also known as 0xFFFF in hexadecimal format, indicates a severe, non‑erasable internal fault in the airbag control unit. This is a generic error that typically points to a hardware failure of the memory chip or microcontroller and results in the complete deactivation of the entire airbag system.

Technically speaking, this code means that during its internal self‑test, the control unit detected a critical error that no longer ensures the safe operation of the system. It is a general catch‑all error that does not specify the exact defect but signals a total failure of the module.

The control unit then switches to a safety mode to prevent unintended airbag deployment. For this reason, even professional diagnostic tools cannot clear this error until the underlying cause has been resolved.

How can you recognize error code 65535?

The primary symptom of error code 65535 is a continuously illuminated airbag warning light on the instrument cluster. Additionally, it is typical that the fault memory cannot be cleared and workshops are unable to establish communication with the airbag control unit via the OBD interface. The entire restraint system becomes inoperative.

The airbag warning light (SRS light) does not turn off after the vehicle is started. This is the clearest indication for the driver that there is a serious problem within the safety system.
